Two Visitors Pulled Unresponsive From West Maui Waters

Maui firefighters responded to two separate incidents on Wednesday, Feb. 27, in which swimmers were pulled from the ocean unresponsive in West Maui.

The first incident occurred at 9:47 a.m. at the beach fronting the Sheraton Maui resort. Maui Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said beachgoers pulled a 31-year-old man from the water and began CPR efforts.

The department’s Ladder 3 from Lahaina arrived on scene a few minutes later and found the man had regained a pulse and was breathing on his own. Medics transported the individual to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

The second incident occurred at 12:15 p.m. at the beach fronting the Nāpili Kai resort. MFS Chief Yatsushiro said beachgoers pulled a 30-year-old woman from the water and began administering CPR. A fire crew from Nāpili arrived on scene and took over CPR efforts, according to department reports.

The woman was transported to Maui Memorial Center in critical condition. Ocean conditions were reported to be calm at the time for both incidents.

Both individuals are believed to be visitors from China.
