South Kīhei Road Resurfacing to End March 6
The Maui County Department of Public Works expects to complete resurfacing a portion of South Kīhei Road by March 6, 2019, and help relieve recent traffic impacts.
Crews finished work from the Kihei Bay Vista Condos to just north of Namau‘u Place last week and have begun resurfacing the road from Namau‘u Place to Kauha‘a Street. The road is currently alternating one lane of traffic and once work is completed, both lanes will reopen with only minor work thereafter.
Additional work is being conducted on Waipuilani Road, but no major effects on traffic have been observed.
Department personnel will continue to monitor work on both South Kīhei and Waipuilani roads, and will notify contractors in regards to any changes, such as limiting activities to non-lane closing work.
The Maui Bus will resume its service on South Kīhei Road, which includes the Kīhei Islander Route #10 and the Kīhei Village Route #15, once work is completed.
The County of Maui would like to thank Kīhei Charter School for staggering its end times by grade level to help alleviate traffic.
Motorists have reported long delays recently due to the county’s resurfacing project and the Hawai‘i Department of Education’s full road closure of Kulanihakoi Street. The state DOE is installing underground utilities for Phase 1 of Kīhei High School and officials expect to complete the project by the end of April.
Motorists are advised to follow all traffic control signs and personnel. The County of Maui thanks members of the public for their cooperation and apologizes for the inconvenience.
