Maui Unemployment Rate Sees Slight Decline

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations recently announced that the unemployment rate for the island of Maui was 2.7% in April, compared to 2.8% the month before. Maui’s unemployment rate in April of last year was 2.1%.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the state was 2.8% in April, the same as in March. Statewide, 19,000 residents were unemployed during the month. Nationally, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.6% for the month, compared to 3.8% the month before.

Initial claims decreased by 12%, while weeks claims decreased by 6% for unemployment benefits compared to one year ago. Over-the-month, initial claims declined 20% and weeks claims declined 2%.

These unemployment rate figures for the State of Hawaiʻi and the US are seasonally adjusted in accordance with the US Bureau of Labor Statistics methodology. The not seasonally adjusted rate for the State was also 2.8% in April, compared to the revised rate of 2.9% in March.
