Maui Vigil Seeks End to Detention Camps

A candlelight vigil is planned on Maui on Friday in coordination with the worldwide ‘Lights for Liberty‘ event that organizers say is intended to bring attention to conditions of detention camps that house immigrants.

The Maui event runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2019, at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College campus, fronting the Kaʻaʻike building.

Confirmed speakers include: Kim Coco Iwamoto; immigration attorney Kevin J. Block; Courtney Goodloe, also an immigration lawyer and social justice advocate; and Liz Cortez, a graduate of Maui High School, DACA recipient, and legal assistant at Maui Immigration Law, LLC.

Local organizer Erika Lechuga DiSalvo says that with changes to detention policy, Customs and Border Patrol facilities have become overcrowded with immigrants.

Organizers say attendees to the Maui vigil are asked to bring a chair or blanket, a battery operated candle or downloaded candle app on their phone. This is a fire-free event.
