TSA is advising travelers to arrive at Kahului Airport more than two hours prior to flight departure today.

On Thursday, July 11, multiple flights scheduled to depart OGG were cancelled due to a large 10,000 acre wildfire north of the airport on Maui.

Many of the cancelled flights were rescheduled for today. As a result, the number of travelers who will depart OGG will exceed the capacity of the TSA security checkpoint during multiple times throughout today.

TSA is using all available resources, including staffing all available lanes, to continue to screen travelers and their belongings during this surge in the number of departing flights. In the meantime, TSA offers the following tips for travelers:

Arrive more than two hours prior to flight departure.
Consider checking your luggage. Reducing the number of carry-on bags and personal items that need to be screened through the security checkpoint saves time for all travelers.
Be prepared for the screening process. Don’t bring prohibited items to security checkpoint. Use TSA’s “Can I Bring?” feature to find out whether an item is allowed in your carry-on luggage or if it needs to be placed in checked luggage. This information is available on TSA’s website (https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/all) or you can download the “MyTSA” app for on-the-go travel advice.

Operations at Kahului Airport are normal, but we continue to ask passengers to contact their airline prior to travelling to the airport as the situation may change.  Earlier this morning several flights that were diverted from Maui yesterday resumed their flights to OGG.

Due to the influx of passengers from yesterday’s cancelled flights, passengers are experiencing delays at OGG. If your airline has confirmed that your flight is departing from OGG today, please arrive three hours prior to your departure time to ensure you can clear security checkpoints.

As the fire is still not contained that people should exercise caution and expect possible delays as crews may temporarily shut down roads.
