Henry Kapono’s Artist 2 Artist Series Continues

Maui Arts & Cultural Center presents the continuation of the Artist 2 Artist series with four added concerts. In the series, GRAMMY Award Nominee Henry Kapono hosts some of Hawaiʻi’s most iconic musical artists and rising young stars as he opens each show with his own classic hits, then talks story one-on-one with the featured artist, “deconstructing” their career as only one artist to another can do.

The series, all on Friday evenings, continues Aug. 23 featuring Henry Kapono with:

  • Sean Na‘auao: Friday, Aug. 23, 7:30 p.m.
  • Blayne Asing: Friday, Sept. 13, 7:30 p.m.
  • Jerry Santos: Friday, Oct. 11, 7:30 p.m.
  • Alx Kawakami – Celebrating the music of James Taylor: Friday, Nov. 8, 7:30 p.m.

The show also showcases an intimate performance by each artist including a jam session with Henry.  Taking place in the intimate McCoy Studio Theater, each concert allows audiences an up close and personal experience with the artists.

Tickets go on sale for these additional concerts to MACC members Saturday, July 20 and to the general public Saturday, July 27. Special discounts are available for those purchasing tickets to all four concerts.

Henry Kapono is a vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, composer, performer, audience favorite—and has multiple honors and awards, including a Grammy nomination.

He has taken home numerous Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, including Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year, Single of the Year, Album & Rock Album of the Year and in 2018, Compilation of the Year for “The Songs of C&K”.

Henry has been at the creative forefront of contemporary Hawaiian music throughout his career – from the very successful duo of Cecilio & Kapono in the 1970s and 80s, to launching his solo career that produced 17 albums, to his groundbreaking “Wild Hawaiian” collaborations that fused the power of Hawaiian traditions with driving rock rhythms and a soundtrack for the new century.

Henry presides over Kapono Inc, one of Hawaiʻi’s top multi-function entertainment companies. He is equally known for his community support and philanthropic endeavors recently launching the “The Henry Kapono Foundation” in 2018 whose mission is to “Support the community through music and the arts and by giving with Aloha”.

August 23:

Born in Kalihi and raised in Pearl City, avid sportsman and 2019 Island Music Legacy award winner, Sean Naʻauao, is an accomplished musician and vocalist, composer and producer and has won multiple prestigious Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards including Island Contemporary Album of the Year for his local anthem, “Fish and Poi”. As a founding member of the hit Hawaiian group Manaʻo Company, Sean can’t remember a time when music wasn’t a part of his life. From singer/songwriter to producer and record label, Sean has remained firmly rooted in Hawai‘i’s music scene for the last two decades. His repertoire runs from the most contemporary of island music to the heartfelt traditional Hawaiian mele. Recognized for his exceptional vocal ability, Sean made Frank Hewitt’s traditional Hawaiian composition, “Kapilina,” a famous hit.

September 13:

Born and raised on the island of O‘ahu, singer/songwriter Blayne Asing started playing the ‘ukulele at the age of eight and guitar by the age of nine. Blayne is self-taught “by having a good ear for learning and watching YouTube videos”. In addition to playing a variety of instruments, Blayne is a prolific songwriter with a distinctive voice complimented by his own unique country/folk/island style. Releasing his first album in 2015, at the age of 27, Blayne won Most Promising Artist at the 2016 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards and again for Single of the Year in 2017.

October 11:

Best known for his work in the musical group Olomana, Jerry Santos has maintained an influential presence on the Hawai‘i music scene for over four decades. Born and raised on the windward side of O‘ahu and a graduate of The Kamehameha Schools, Jerry established himself early on as one of Hawai‘i’s most prolific songwriters. As a founding member and lead singer of the legendary group, Olomana, Jerry helped to create a unique and easily recognizable musical style, blending Hawaiian music with contemporary rhythms. Over the years, Jerry has performed all over the world and his work has been recognized by the Hawai‘i musical community with numerous Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards.

November 8:

Born on the island of O‘ahu, Alx Kawakami has enjoyed a successful career as a singer/songwriter and producer for the past 15 years. With six albums and over 40 original compositions under his belt, Alx has worked with and written for many major commercials, TV shows and feature films. After several years performing with his father & brothers in the group, Manoa DNA, a long time Hawai‘i and Japan favorite, Alx spread his wings in 2014 and embarked on his solo career. Alx will also share his lifelong inspiration and passion for the music of James Taylor with a special tribute.

Tickets per show are $35, $45, $65 plus applicable fees. Tickets for the four concerts go on sale to MACC members first, Saturday, July 20 and to the general public Saturday, July 27. Those wishing to purchase tickets for all four in the series of concerts are eligible for a special series discount; MACC members receive a 20 percent discount and the general public receive a ten percent discount. Full, four-concert series tickets must be purchased in person or by phone directly with the MACC Box Office. For individual show tickets, MACC members receive a ten percent discount.

Those who wish to become a MACC member, can sign up at MauiArts.org. The MACC Box Office is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for window and phone sales and individual show tickets are available anytime online.
