Milled Rumble Strip Installation on Honoapi‘ilani Hwy Results in Traffic Backup

Motorists have been reporting a significant delay in travel times between Central and West Maui today.

The state Department of Transportation has confirmed that the backup is due to the installation of milled rumble strips along the Honoapiʻilani Highway.

There is a lane shift currently in place from the windmill farm to Papalaua Wayside Park from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and a single lane closure in the Lahaina-bound direction at night from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.

We are awaiting an update from authorities on just how long this work will last.

Motorists traveling from Lahaina to Central Maui reported it took about 90 minutes for the commute at around 11 a.m. today–a route that usually takes around 40 to 45 minutes.

Honoapiʻilani Highway (Route 30)

1) Lahaina

Lane closure on Honoapiʻilani Highway (Route 30) in both directions between Aholo Road and Lahainaluna Road on Tuesday, July 30, and Wednesday, July 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., for landscape maintenance.

2) Māʻalaea (Night Work)

Lane shift and closure on Honoapiʻilani Highway (Route 30) in the Lahaina-bound direction in the vicinity of mile marker 7.6 on Monday, July 29, through Friday, Aug. 2, for slope stabilization work.

• Lanes will be shifted over a 24-hour period.
• Alternating lane closure from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
