Six Separate Small Brush Fires Doused Overnight Along “Pali”

Maui firefighters doused six separate small brush fires along the “Pali” section of the Honoapiʻilani Highway overnight.

The fires resulted in the temporary closure of the highway between Māʻalaea and Ukumehame from 3:20 to 4:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019.

Maui Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said the fires included:

  • three fires approximately 40 feet by 40 feet in size burning mauka of the highway; and
  • three fires approximately 200 feet in size burning along the roadway, down the cliffside, makai of the highway.

Weather at the time included clear skies with light NE winds of 0 to 5 miles per hour.

The last of the six fires was extinguished at 4:40 a.m.

The cause of the fires is under investigation.
