Maui Reflects on 18th Anniversary of 9/11

Maui state and county fire fighters along with local Transportation and Safety Administration (TSA) officials took some time out of their morning to remember those lost during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks today, on the 18th anniversary of the event.

There were two 9/11 ceremonies, one at the Kahului Fire Station on Dairy Road and the other held at the main security checkpoint at Kahului Airport.

On Dairy Road the remembrance event included a moment of silence as well as flying flags half-staff from sunrise to sunset to remember the nearly 3,000 victims who perished on this day.

At Kahului Airport TSA color guards were on display as well as a bugle performance of taps and the sounding of a 9/11 bell. All travel through the airport security checkpoint was suspended during the short ceremony.

In a press release Maui Mayor Mike Victorino said “Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The tragedy of so many lives cut short is beyond words. We must never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice, survivors who mourn their loss and the heroes who risked their lives to save tens of thousands of lives. We honor their memory when we make personal sacrifices of our time, talent and treasure to be good stewards of our community.

Let us be inspired by the mission statement of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. It closes by saying: ‘May the lives remembered, the deeds recognized, and the spirit reawakened be eternal beacons, which reaffirm respect for life, strengthen our resolve to preserve freedom, and inspire an end to hatred, ignorance and intolerance.’”
