The Maui County Emergency Management Agency reports that there was a system error in which calls were inadvertently made to members of the public.

According to the department, members of the public may have received a phone call from 99999 with no message attached.

It was inadvertently sent out as part of the department’s high surf notification.  “Although we do not routinely use the phone call feature of this system, it is there if needed,” the department advised.

“We apologize for any confusion created by the error this morning and we thank you for your understanding as we look into the cause and correct it,” the department wrote in a notice explaining the error.
