Drivers Asked To Exercise Caution Ahead of ‘Noodle Ride’

The Maui Bicycling League will host a “Noodle Ride” next weekend to demonstrate how to safely pass bicyclists on roadways.

During the event, riders will attach a three-foot long pool noodle to their bicycles to visually indicate a safe passing distance.

MBL organizers are hoping the event can remind Maui drivers of the Safe Passing 3-Foot Law that was passed last year.

The law states that vehicles “passing or overtaking a bicyclist proceeding in the same direction shall allow at least three feet of separation between the right side of the driver’s vehicle, including all mirrors or other protuberances, and the left side of the bicyclist….”

The ride will start at 8:45 a.m. on Oct. 19 in the parking lot of the former K-Mart on Dairy Road and turn around in Pāʻia near Baldwin Avenue. A support vehicle will accompany the riders.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is encouraging drivers to practice safety and respect during the event.
