Statewide Symposiums to Raise Awareness on Sex Trafficking

Hoola Na Pua, a nonprofit working to combat sex trafficking in Hawaiʻi, will be hosting a free symposium on Maui next month.
Itʻs a part of a statewide “Campaign for a Safer Community,” which aims to empower Hawaiʻiʻs visitor industry management, and the entire community, to take a stand against trafficking.
According to Hoola Na Pua, sex traffickers often take advantage of the privacy and anonymity accessible through the hospitality industry.
“Some of the victims are young Hawaiʻi residents,” a press release said.
Representatives from the organization, local law enforcement personnel, and national partners will share their insights on how to tackle trafficking in Hawaiʻi.
Topics that will be discussed during the event include: “Defining Trafficking & Exploitation,” “Tourism Industry as Key Partners in Protecting Our Community,” and “Responding, Reporting, and Action Steps.”
The Maui symposium will be held on Nov. 5 at The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Kāʻanapali from 8 a.m. until noon.
Here is a list of free symposiums scheduled for other islands:
- Nov. 4: Oʻahu (The Royal Hawaiian, Waikīkī)
- Nov. 6: Hawaiʻi Island (Natural Energy Lab of Hawaiʻi Authority – Hale Iako, Kailua-Kona)
- Nov. 7: Kauaʻi (Sheraton Kauai Resort, Poʻipū)
Those interested in attending are being asked to register by Oct. 29.
