“Wai.Kai Week” Highlights Hawaiian Culture, Conservation

Beginning this Sunday, the Maui Ocean Center will host its first ever Wai. Kai Week, a celebration of wai (freshwater and kai (saltwater) that will include a series of informational events and activities for the whole family.
Here is a list of Wai.Kai Week events:
- Sunday, Oct. 20: Beach to reef cleanup at Keālia Pond. Beach yoga will be offered at 7:30 a.m., followed by the cleanup.
- Oct. 20 to 26: The Maui Ocean Center will offer free daytime aquarium and sphere admission for kamaʻāina children ages 12 and under accompanied by a paid kamaʻāina adult. During the week, environmental organizations will showcase their conservation efforts.
Thursday, Oct. 24 from 5:45 p.m. to 9 p.m.: MOCʻs aquarium will debut a new cultural talking series, Kauhulu. This free event focuses on Hawaiian culture, featuring a two-panel discussion highlighting land and sea topics with guest speakers. The evening will also include mele (music) and meaʻai pono (light healthy foods). Free for all ages, seating is limited.
Saturday, Oct. 26 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.: Wai.Kai Benefit. Proceeds will benefit the Maui Ocean Center Marine Institute and Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. The evening will include environmental educators, food, drinks, and live performances by Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winners Nā Hoa and Nā Wai ‘Ehā.
