Maui Mayor Michael Victorino released the following Thanksgiving message this afternoon:

During Thanksgiving we celebrate with family and friends and give thanks for the many blessings that make Maui County nō ka ʻoi. I am thankful for my wife, Joycelyn, my family, friends and my extended family of 2,700 County employees who provide exceptional customer service to our residents and visitors.

With this year’s unprecedented number and size of brush fires, I’m especially grateful to our firefighters, first responders and emergency management personnel who’ve been called upon so often to go above and beyond the call of duty. There have also been times when businesses and nonprofits have stepped up to provide needed food, shelter or other assistance. Mahalo.

Recently, we honored our veterans and their families for their service. If you see veterans, please thank them. Let them know how much their sacrifices mean for our freedom and security.

The strength of our community comes from you, our residents. I’m grateful for all of you who drive safely on our roadways and keep a watchful eye out for drivers who may be impaired or distracted.

As you celebrate Thanksgiving, please remember those in our community who are less fortunate. You can help by contributing your time, talent or treasure to one of our many nonprofit and charitable organizations.

Thank you for the honor of serving you as mayor of Maui County. From my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving.
