New Clearance Pipes at Honolulu Airport to Deter Over Height Vehicles

In an effort to prevent cars that are too tall from entering the Daniel K. Inouye Airport, the department of transportation will be replacing the current PVC height clearance pipes with steel bars.

According to the department, drivers often do not notice or disregard the current height clearance warnings.

Officials warn that vehicles that come into contact with the new pipes may experience severe damage. The department hopes that the bars will “help prevent damage to personal vehicles and airport property.”

Motorists are urged to know their vehicle height before attempting to enter the airport.

The clearance heights will remain the same and are listed below:

• Terminal 2 Parking Structure: 6 feet 2 inches
• Terminal 1 Parking Structure: 7 feet
• International Parking Structure: 8 feet
• Roadway clearance: 13 feet

The bars will be installed nightly from 8:30 p.m. to 5 a.m., beginning on Monday. Work is expected to continue through Dec. 20.

Drivers can expect temporary lane closures and traffic control measures while crews install the pipes.
