Large 7.7 Cuba Earthquake

The USGS is reporting a 7.7 preliminary magnitude earthquake in the Cuba region.  The quake was reported at 9:10 a.m. HST on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2020, at a depth of six miles.

There were no immediate threat alerts posted by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center notes that waves reaching 0.3 to 1 meters above the tide level are possible for some coasts of Belize, Cuba, Honduras, Mexico the Cayman Islands and Jamaica.  The PTWC notes that based on preliminary earthquake parameters, hazardous tsunami waves are possible for coasts located within 300 km (186 miles) of the earthquake epicenter.

Actual amplitudes at the coast may vary from forecast amplitudes due to uncertainties in the forecast and local features.  In particular, maximum tsunami amplitudes on atolls or smaller islands in the affected region and at locations with fringing or barrier reefs will likely be much smaller than the forecast indicates, according to the agency.
3. The USGS says the quake was located 78 miles SSE of Lucea, Hanover, Jamaica; 86 miles SE of Montego Bay, St. James, Jamaica; 94 miles SSE of Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland, Jamaica; 87 miles ENE of Niquero, Granma, Cuba; and 99 miles ENE of Media Luna, Granma, Cuba.
