Maui Mayor Michael Victorino is urging families to stay at home and refrain from visiting others during the holiday weekend as more restrictive rules including a pilot nighttime curfew is in effect.

“For many residents, this weekend is a very important holiday.  Good Friday and Easter Sunday are usually times of family gatherings together, enjoying meals and worship.  This year is different.  This year we prioritize the health and safety of our families,” he said.

“The meaning of this holiday does not change.  The way we celebrate must change,” said Mayor Victorino.

“Please do not go to another house and have another over to yours.  Getting together with friends and family could directly put them at risk for COVID-19.  These are difficult times for all of us, but making changes now will save lives later,” said Mayor Victorino.

The state is also reminding everyone to remain at home and continue practicing physical distancing during the holiday weekend.

Gov. Ige said, “This Sunday is Easter. It’s a time we usually spend celebrating with family and friends and watching the kids hunt Easter eggs in the backyard. But these are not normal times, and I cannot stress enough the need to remain vigilant. Enjoy your Easter. But continue your physical distancing.”

“Do not gather in large groups,” he said, “Stay at home and use this time to reflect on what you can do as individuals to flatten the curve, help our neighbors and protect our community.”

The stay-at-home order for the state is currently in effect until Apr. 30, 2020.
