TKG Hosts “2020 Census for Hawai‘i: A Virtual Concert”

The hour-long production will feature five of Hawaiʻi’s top musicians and entertainers, including Henry Kapono and Friends, Kapena, Barry Flanagan, and Grammy Award nominees Josh Tatofi and Kimié Miner.

All-star concert to encourage Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders to complete the 2020 Census

The The Kālaimoku Group is hosting a virtual concert as a call to all Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders to complete the 2020 Census. The hour-long production will feature five of Hawaiʻi’s top musicians and entertainers, including Henry Kapono and Friends, Kapena, Barry Flanagan, and Grammy Award nominees Josh Tatofi and Kimié Miner. The virtual concert will be hosted by legendary Hawaiʻi television personality Kimo Kahoano and will underscore why completing the 2020 Census is important for the future of Hawaiʻi.

The concert will air primetime on local television stations, KHNL on Tuesday, April 28 from 7 to 8 p.m., K5 on Thursday, April 30 from 8 to 9 p.m., then on KGMB on Saturday, May 2 from 6 to 7 p.m. Viewers can also tune in to watch the show on Hawaiʻi News Now’s Facebook and YouTube platforms. In addition there will be other social media platforms that may be sharing the concert.

The 2020 Census for Hawaiʻi virtual concert is a part of the U.S. Census Bureau’s integrated communications campaign designed to educate the public about the 2020 Census and to encourage them to respond online at 2020census.gov, by phone, or by mail.

The U.S. Constitution mandates that a census of the population be conducted every decade. Responding to the 2020 Census is easy, safe and important, and it’s key to shaping the future of communities. Census statistics are used to determine the number of seats each state holds in the U.S. House of Representatives and how billions of dollars in federal funds are distributed annually for critical public services like hospitals, schools, roads, bridges and emergency response.

The results from the 2020 Census will help inform how funding is allocated for the next ten years for schools, grants and educational programs for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders who have been historically undercounted. To date, nearly half of households in Hawaiʻi have responded to the 2020 Census and just over half of households in the nation have responded.
