Free educational materials about protecting Maui’s environment by preventing the pollution of stormwater are now available online for elementary school students.

The online learning resource is made possible by the State of Hawaii, Department of Transportation Highways Division, Maui District.

Geared towards elementary school students, the educational resources include an activity book, presentation, with guide, and interactive quiz.

Earlier in the year, the environmental management team from the Highway’s division visited several elementary schools on Maui to teach students about Maui’s storm drain system, its relationship to the ocean, the impacts of polluted stormwater, and what individuals could do to help protect the water.

More than 1,000 students on the island participated in classroom presentations before schools were closed due to the COVID-19 situation.

In response, the Department of Transportation has made its educational stormwater materials available to families and teachers online so students can continue to learn about stormwater pollution prevention from home.

“An important part of what our engineers and scientists do is help students and the community learn about the stormwater system and what they can do to protect Maui’s water and ecosystems from pollutants,” said Ty Fukuroku, Environmental Management Program Manager for the Department of Transportation Highways Division, Maui District.

“While we’ve had to temporarily suspend our classroom presentations, by providing our materials online, we hope families and students can continue to learn together at home,” he said

To access the materials, visit www.stormwatermaui.com and click on the ‘Education’ tab in the top menu.
