UPDATE: Hāli‘imaile Fire 50% Contained, 20 Acres Burned

A fire in Hāliʻimaile has burned 20 acres of brush and is now 50% contained, as of 7:48 p.m.

Fire crews will remain on scene throughout the night to continue securing the perimeter of the fire and conduct mop-up operations, according to Maui Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro.

The fire was first reported at 3:35 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2020 in an area with very limited accessibility makai of Hāliʻimaile Road near Leie Street. Crews arrived on scene to find a working brush fire in heavy brush.

Approximately 30 homes evacuated along Aoiki Street and Leie Street are currently still evacuated as of 7:48 p.m., but are expected to be allowed back shortly, according to FSC Yatsushiro.

Crews responding to the scene included: Air-1, Air-2 and Air-3; four Engine Companies, two emergency callback crews, two MFD Tankers and several private tankers.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Current conditions on scene are clear with winds blowing at approximately 20 mph.

The Hāna Highway is now completely open.  It was closed earlier due to a traffic accident.  Firefighters continue to battle a fire below Hāliʻimaile Road.

At around 5 p.m. precautionary evacuations were being conducted for homes along Aoiki Street and the makai side of Leie Street.

Maui police report that Leie Street remains completely closed. Traffic on Haleakalā Highway is alternating in the area of Hāliʻimaile.  Motorists are asked to avoid the area.

Maui fire crews are battling a brush fire in gulch below Hāliʻimaile Road on Maui.

At around 5 p.m. precautionary evacuations were being conducted for homes along Aoiki Street and the makai side of Leie Street.

Maui police report that Leie Street is completely closed. The Pāʻia Bound Lane of Hāna Highway and Haleakalā Highway is also closed due to a motor vehicle accident. Traffic on Haleakalā Highway is alternating in the area of Hāliʻimaile.  Motorists are asked to avoid the areas.
