Interisland Travel Quarantine Guidance for Maui County

Maui County residents are reminded that the Governor has reinstituted the mandatory 14-day quarantine for any travel other than arrival on Oʻahu. The quarantine includes travel from Maui to Hawaiʻi Island or Kauaʻi, as well as travel to and from Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi.

This takes effect on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2020, and remains in effect through Aug. 31, unless terminated or extended by a separate proclamation. 

Individuals on Maui who are traveling to Honolulu, would not have to quarantine for 14 days while on Oʻahu. However, when returning, these individuals would have to quarantine upon return to Maui County.

“With Oʻahu’s 200 new cases reported today and 1,617 active cases statewide, reinstituting the interisland quarantine was necessary to protect our community and healthcare system,” Mayor Michael Victorino said. “I also want to let our residents know that we are discouraging any non-essential travel, but we understand if you need to travel for work or medical care.”

In partnership with the other counties, the County of Maui has set up an email to field exemption requests for travel to and within Maui County. Travelers can email their exemption request to [email protected].

Those who live in Maui County and need to travel to another neighbor island, are asked to visit the respective county website for exemption information.

Mayor Victorino tells Maui Now that the neighbor island quarantine applies to all forms of travel.  “So the interisland ferry between Lānaʻi and Lahaina still will be subject to quarantine unless you’re exempt or an essential worker, as described in the essential workers list,” said Mayor Victorino.

If traveling from Maui to Kona or Hilo on Hawaiʻi Island, and you’re an essential worker or have an exemption, Mayor Victorino said “you do not have to quarantine when you return; however, you may have to quarantine based on their rules… you need to check into wherever you’re headed to (your destination) outside of Oʻahu and make sure that you comply with the rules that county has as you travel there.”

The Maui Police Department will be enforcing the mandatory 14-day quarantine order for transpacific and interisland travelers.  Suspected violations of the 14-day quarantine can be reported via email to [email protected], or to the department’s non-emergency phone number as a backup at (808) 244-6400.

Other updates for Maui County:

• The County of Maui is NOT shutting down businesses that are currently open.
• Beaches and parks will remain OPEN.
• The public is required to wear face coverings when they leave their home.
• Any social gatherings of more than 10 people are prohibited.
• Businesses and places of worship have their own capacity limits under State and County rules, and are not subject to the 10 people or less rule.

“Our major focus for the 10-person limitation continues to be for unsupervised social gatherings such as parties, funerals and celebrations,” Mayor Victorino said. “These gatherings have shown to dramatically increase the rate of spread of COVID-19, as evidenced on Oʻahu.”

Call Center Hours of Operation:

The Office of the Mayor Call Center has extended its hours starting Sunday, Aug. 9, to help answer questions for Maui County. The phone number is (808) 270-7855.  Hours of operation are:

• Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and
• Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
