BREAKING: Pali Brush Fire Shuts Down Traffic Along Honoapi’ilani Highway

Update: 12:21 a.m. 10.3.19 All roads are OPEN. Update: 11:52 p.m. 10.2.19 Maui police are preparing to reopen the Honoapiʻilani Highway in both directions. Motorists are reminded that road conditions and closures may change immediately and without warning, and intermittent closures are possible as crews continue to battle a large brush fire in the West Maui Mountains. Police advise that the fire is still burning however it is not threatening the roadway at this time. Motorists are reminded to follow the instructions of officers. The fire burned an estimated 4,100 acres since it started at around 9:10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2019. Fire personnel continue to monitor the fire throughout tonight and into Thursday morning. Emergency shelters remain open at Princess Nahiʻenaʻena Elementary School in Lahaina and Maui High School. Update: 926 p.m. 10.2.2019 Police are advising motorists to obey officers on scene and drive in the contraflow lane ONLY. Update: 9:04 p.m. 10.2.2019 Officers will begin contra-flowing traffic along Honoapiʻilani Highway Between Māʻalaea and Ukumehame. Motorists are asked to exercise patience as we try to move traffic through the area. Please keep in mind, the contra-flow will be maintained as long as fire conditions permit.
