In 2016, then Gov. David Ige told state lawmakers that he was committed to cooling 1,000 classrooms by the end of the year. Lawmakers agreed to do so with $100 million. But it didn’t work, according to a blunt and unsparing report by the Office of the State Auditor.

For Hawaiʻi residents hoping to lower their energy bills this summer, Hawaiʻi Energy has released its complete list of 2021 residential rebates for individuals looking to invest in energy-efficient cooling equipment and installations, including air conditioning, whole house fans, pool pumps and more.

Keiki will be cooler now that new air conditioning has been installed at the Kahi Kamalii Infant and Toddler Center, a childcare and early Childhood education facility operated by Maui Economic Opportunity and managed by the J. Walter Cameron Center.

The effort was spearheaded by Rep. Joe Souki of Maui, and includesmoney to make improvements to air conditioning systems at the Kaʻaike and Pāʻina buildings.

1,000 classrooms now have air conditioning and 323 others will be complete by the end of September. The AC units were installed in 88 schools on 5 islands.

The Wailuku Health Center on Maui is getting $268,000 for air conditioning improvements.  The center’s original design from 1967, utilized natural ventilation which no longer meets Federal requirements.  Under the Federal Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act, doors must be kept shut and ground level windows covered with curtains or blinds for the privacy of clients.  […]
