Residents mixed over 100% affordable housing plan Hale Waipu’ilani in S. Maui
Saying they’re for affordable housing — just not in this area — at least a dozen opponents to proposed Hale Waipu’ilani 100% workforce project in Kīhei pointed to flooding and traffic concerns Monday during the Maui County Council’s Affordable Housing Committee meeting. However, a handful of other residents, including the leader of Maui’s affordable housing plan, said the 28-unit affordable project is sorely needed, even if the neighbors don’t want it in their backyards.
Panel pulls requirement for N. Kīhei affordable housing project so it can move ahead
Saying that a much-needed affordable housing project in North Kihei shouldn’t be held up over county roadway requirements, Maui Planning Commission on Tuesday morning voted to pull the condition, allowing Hale Kaiola to move full-steam ahead. Hale Kaiola is a 100% workforce housing project with 20 duplexes containing 40 homes at the corner of Kaiola Place and ʻOhukai Road. Recently 40 local families were chosen via lottery of 117 applicants. Units will be owner-occupied with no rentals and start at $395,000.
Councilmember King to host community town hall on affordable housing, March 22
Councilmember Kelly Takaya King hosts an in-person town hall on March 22 at 6 p.m. at the Malcolm Center, 1305 N. Holopono St., to discuss affordable housing and address residents’ questions on affordable housing.
Alaula Builders selects 40 Maui families in Kīhei workforce housing lottery
Alaula Builders shared they will be presenting two more 100% workforce housing neighborhoods before the Maui County Council in April to address the pressing need for local housing on the island.
New workforce homes in Kīhei now taking applications starting at $390,000
The infilled neighborhood will consist of 100% owner occupied workforce housing units exclusively for local residents and all created with sustainable design and construction. The development itself will consist of 40 duplexes across three acres of land.
Lottery Applications Being Taken for Buying Home in New Maui Workforce Complex
Alaula Builders will hold a lottery to select the applicants who will be offered an opportunity to secure one of the 40 units at Hale Kaiola, an affordable workforce development in North Kīhei. Applications are now being accepted for the lottery.
