Erosion continues to impact homes along Oʻahu’s north shore

Debris from temporary shoreline hardening measures like sandbag seawalls currently litter the beach. One home along that stretch partially collapsed onto the beach and is actively being demolished, while a second is scheduled to be demolished soon. DLNR is concerned with the unpredictable situation, as more of the coastal dune beneath the residences is undermined. This will potentially place other neighboring homes in a similar predicament, according to department officials.

BLNR Passes Highly Contested Beach Nourishment Project

The state BLNR heard from the Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands (OCCL) on Item K-2, a programmatic statewide small-scale beach restoration (SSBR) permitting program that would reauthorize and expand the existing beach nourishment program OCCL to streamline activities. The motion is highly contested by many in the Maui community.

Maui Draft Hazard Mitigation Plan Nears Completion

The Maui Emergency Management Agency has nearly completed an update to the County’s Hazard Mitigation Plan. It addresses threats such as wildfires, significant beach erosion and highway rockslides and looks at how the County can lessen the impact of natural hazards such as wildfires, tropical storms and erosion on Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi.

He said sea level inundation is having an impact on the island’s beaches, the Honoapiʻilani Highway and homes and condos near the shoreline.  He said “it just makes sense” to finally take a proactive approach to adapting to sea level rise so that more buildings are not approved in future tidal zones.
