On Maui, the greatest rainfall totals were at West Wailuaiki (between Keʻanae and Nāhiku) in East Maui where more than 24 inches fell over four days, followed by Puʻu Kukui  (Mauna Kahalawai) in the West Maui Mountains where nearly 15 inches were reported over the same period.

County and state departments continue to assess storm damage impacts and have updated information on when some services will resume.

The tree blocked the road for several hours as a six-man Maui County road crew worked with a bulldozer and chainsaws to remove it during relentless rainfall.

All Maui County departments are reviewing operations this morning in order to determine which services can resume and when.

The Tropical Storm Warning has been discontinued for Oʻahu and Maui County; and the Tropical Storm Watch has been discontinued for Kauaʻi County.

On Maui, after staff assessments, all parks except for Waiʻānapanapa State Park are expected to reopen in the morning. Waiʻānapanapa is not accessible currently off the Hāna Highway which was severely impacted by the storm.

Weather impacts from Hurricane Lane could be felt into the weekend as the Category 3 system forges a slow advance up the island chain.

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa is updating the public about Maui County response as Hurricane Lane continues its path toward the islands.  The press conference began at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2018.

A FLOOD WARNING is now in effect for the island of Maui until 2:45 p.m. At 11:30 a.m., heavy rain continues over east Maui from Keʻanae to Kīpahulu.

Maui Electric, Hawaiian Electric, and Hawaiʻi Electric Light are moving crews and equipment where needed as Hurricane Lane approaches the islands, and want customers to know they should prepare for storm-related power outages.

Tropical storm conditions are expected to begin over portions of Maui county later today, with hurricane conditions expected in some areas by Friday.

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa hosted a press conference on Wednesday afternoon ahead of Hurricane Lane as it continues its approach up the island chain.  

Gov. Ige’s request for a Presidential Disaster Declaration for the State of Hawai‘i has been approved. Word came late Wednesday afternoon that the governor’s request was granted, as Hurricane Lane approaches the Hawaiian Islands.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service will close Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center and the Keālia Coastal Boardwalk on Aug. 22-23, in preparation for any effects from Hurricane Lane.

With Lane continuing its approach toward the Hawaiian Islands, there’s lots of closures and cancellations being announced. 

Emergency shelters will open at select locations across Maui County at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018.

Gov. Ige signed an emergency proclamation that will provide relief for disaster damages, losses and suffering caused by Hurricane Lane.

All University of Hawaiʻi campuses and all non-essential university operations on Hawaiʻi Island, Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānai will be closed until further notice.
