The Kula Community Association (KCA) has formally called on Gov. Josh Green and the State of Hawaiʻi to take urgent action in advance of what is expected to be another challenging wildfire season in Upcountry Maui.

Community meeting July 2 on proposed Kahekili Highway slope repair project

Community members are encouraged to attend a July 2, 2024, meeting on proposed road and slope repairs along Kahekili Highway in the vicinity of Mile 15 – a narrow, fragile portion of roadway that connects Kahakuloa and West Maui. The community meeting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, at Waikapū Community Center, 22 E. Waikō Road, Waikapū, according to the County of Maui Department of Public Works.

West Maui visitors advised to leave Lahaina and Maui; airlines reporting open flights

A mass bus evacuation for visitors will be staged at Sheraton Maui Resort in Kāʻanapali this afternoon and take visitors directly to Kahului Airport. Five County of Maui buses, each with a capacity of 49 people, and five Polynesian Adventure Tours buses, each with a capacity of 50, will provide the transportation, with the first wave of buses scheduled for around 4 p.m.

Justice Department: two Maui men sentenced for 2014 racially motivated attack in Kahakuloa

Two men from Maui were sentenced in federal court for their racially motivated attack on a white man who was attempting to move into their neighborhood of Kahakuloa. Kaulana Alo-Kaonohi, 33, was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison; and Levi Aki Jr., 33, was sentenced to four years and two months in prison.

Rescue at “Olivine Pools”: 3 visitors knocked down by large wave, treated for injuries

All three were transported by the Emergency Medical Service for treatment of injuries. Fire officials say one woman suffered lacerations, one had an arm injury, and the man had injuries to his head and neck. All were described as visitors in their mid-20s.

Drilling of soil test borings for the Kahekili Highway slope repair project will be done in Kahakuloa on the south side of Waihali Gulch, in the vicinity of Milepost 15, from Oct. 17 through Oct. 24, 2022.

The planned closure of Kahekili Highway at Milepost 15 has been postponed because of a breakdown in a drilling rig needed for the project, the Department of Public Works, Engineering Division announced.
