The Kaiser Permanente Lahaina Clinic sign was all that was left standing after the Aug. 8 wildfire swept through historic Lahaina town and leveled the Waineʻe Street clinic where doctors and nurses cared for patients’ colds and flu, broken bones and expectant moms since opening its doors in 1969. And, so a 7.5-foot woven lei was a fitting way to connect the past, present and future at Kaiser’s official Hoʻōla (meaning to rejuvenate, to give life and energy, to heal) event Tuesday at the clinic’s new 5,200-square-foot location at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort in Kāʻanapali.

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii today announced that Diana “Jill” Riggs, RN, MSN, has been appointed to chief administrative officer and senior vice president of Care Delivery Operations for Hawaii Permanente Medical Group. She replaces Sally Lee, RN, MSN, who is retiring after a 15-year career at Kaiser Permanente.

Kaiser Permanente Hawaiʻi has awarded an $80,000 grant to the American Heart Association to provide health screenings, nutrition resources and hypertension education to about 1,000 Pacific Islanders on Oʻahu through faith-based outreach.

Every year, Kaiser Permanente partners with community organizations across the state that are working to address pressing socioeconomic issues impacting Hawaiʻi residents. In 2021, Kaiser Permanente provided $3.8 million in grants to 50 community organizations that provided services to improve social determinants to good health and well-being.

“The families in our shelters have already been hit hard financially but the COVID-19 pandemic has made living life even more challenging. This donation will be help our families to keep the safety net’s they have begun to build since being in the homeless shelter program,” said Monique Ibarra, executive director of KHAKO.

Kaiser Permanente, Hawaiʻi announced Greg Christian and Dr. John Yang will be the new leadership team for its Hawaiʻi operations.

Dr. Esver served as an associate optometrist at Solano Eye Care in Fairfield, California and gained clinical experience at the Veteran’s Affairs Palo Alto Healthcare System in San Jose, California and at the Meredith W. Morgan University Eye Center in Berkeley, California. 

Three new doctors recently joined Kaiser Permanenteʻs Maui locations. The new doctors include Zachary Thielen, who practices orthopaedics at the Wailuku Medical Office, Christopher Chung, a hospitalist at Maui Memorial Medical Center, and Robert Kawa, who joined the family medicine department at the Maui Lani Medical Office.
