The first humpback whale sighting for the 2024 season has been reported by Teralani Sailing Adventures. The sighting was at approximately 10 a.m. Sunday by Capt. Matt Talbot and the crew of Teralani during a snorkel sail off the coast of Ka’anapali.

Nearly $100 million in capital improvement projects and grant-in-aid appropriations were included for Maui Nui in the final version of the state budget that was voted on in conference committee earlier in the week.  

Progress continued April through June on projects and goals of the Maui Destination Management Action Plan, which is a part of the Maui Nui plan.

Whatʻs happening with the Maui Nui Destination Management Action Plan? According to the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority’s fall update, 16 of the 18 sub-actions in phase 1 are in progress and one sub-action about safe sun screen education is completed.

Maui Nui’s individual fundraising efforts resulted in a total of $1,203,000 being raised. These funds will be distributed to more than 200 nonprofits around the state with all funds raised in Maui County being distributed specifically to Maui County nonprofits.

“We have forests that are similar to the forest on Hawai‘i Island where ʻalalā were released. There are abundant food resources in our Maui Nui forests; abundant trees that would be suitable for nesting platforms. And we do not have the ʻio predation risk, because we don’t have ‘io here,” Duvall said.

Mālama Maui Nui presents its Art of Trash 2021, an annual juried exhibition that includes an art gallery and a “trashion show” on April 3.

The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority has published the 2021-2023 Maui Nui Destination Management Action Plan, which is part of the authority’s strategic vision and continuing efforts to manage tourism in a responsible and regenerative manner.

Maui United Way received another grant from the Hawai’i Community Foundation to continue purchasing personal protective equipment (PPE) to distribute to non-profits throughout Maui Nui to keep staff, offices and clients safe and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With many people needing assistance due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Maui United Way has created a 211 helpline position that is dedicated to serving the community of Maui Nui. 211 is a free, confidential referral and information helpline and website.
