The Hawai‘i Department of Health has identified a travel-related case of Zika virus and a separate travel-related case of dengue virus. Although both are on Oʻahu, these are unrelated cases. The affected individuals were exposed to the respective virus while traveling in regions where Zika or dengue virus is known to circulate. The two cases are not connected to each other or to prior cases reported in Hawai‘i.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Health has identified a new travel-related case of dengue virus on Oʻahu, bringing the total number of dengue cases to 13 in the state in 2025 (one on Maui, 12 on Oʻahu). The affected individual in this current case was exposed to the virus while traveling in a region where dengue is common and is not connected to prior cases.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Health has confirmed a new travel-related case of dengue virus on Oʻahu, bringing the total number of dengue cases to 12 in the state in 2025 (one on Maui, 11 on Oʻahu). The affected individual in this current case was exposed to the virus while traveling in a region where dengue is common and is not connected to prior cases.

The Hawai‘i Department of Health has identified a new case of travel-related dengue virus case on Oʻahu, bringing the number of total cases to 15 identified in the state in 2024 (one on Kauaʻi, four on Maui, 10 on Oʻahu). The affected travelers were exposed in various countries where dengue is common.

There have been five confirmed travel-related dengue cases identified in the state (one on Maui, four on Oʻahu) so far in 2024.

The Center for Biological Diversity on Wednesday filed a lawsuit against the US Fish and Wildlife Service for allegedly “failing to designate critical habitat and develop a recovery plan” for the threatened ‘i‘iwi, one of Hawai‘i’s imperiled honeycreepers.

With the expected surge in travel for the 2016 IRONMAN World Championship triathlon, the health officials are urging the public to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes and reduce the risk of spreading diseases, including Zika, dengue, and chikungunya.

The Department of Health has relaunched its Fight the Bite campaign and expanded it to include all mosquito-borne diseases including Zika, dengue & chikungunya.

Last year’s record-breaking hurricane season in Hawaii underscores the need for Maui County citizens to be better informed and better prepared.
