The US Postal Service clearly acknowledges the geographic isolation and unique needs of the Kalaupapa community, said Rep. Hirono in response to the news. So far, the Postal Service has only made a decision about Kalaupapa, and not the others that were being considered for closure.

A two hour meeting is underway t the McVeigh Social Hall on Molokai to discuss the potential closure of the town’s Post Office at Kalaupapa. The post office was among four in the state that were included on a list of potential closures released by the US Postal Service.

The post office is one of four in the state, and among 3,700 in the nation that are being eyed for possible shut down. The others in Hawai’i include: the Uptown Honolulu Post Office, the Kapolei Post Office on O’ahu, and the Hanamaulu Post Office on Kaua’i.
