Maui severe weather updates for Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024: Maui Flood Warning canceled

A Flash Flood Warning is canceled for the island of Maui as of 1:54 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024. The National Weather Service reports that heavy rain on Maui has ended, and flooding is no longer expected to pose a threat. A Flood Watch remains in effect until 6 p.m. for Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi, Maui, Molokaʻi, and the Big Island of Hawaiʻi.

Heavy pockets of rain reported over several different areas of Maui prompted a flood advisory from the National Weather Service that will remain in effect until 4 p.m., but may need to be extended longer if heavy rains persist.

Special Weather Statement: Risk of Severe Thunderstorms

“In addition to frequent lightning and intense rainfall, severe thunderstorms are capable of producing damaging winds and hail the size of quarters or larger,” the forecast stated.

“At 8:01 p.m. radar showed moderate to heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms moving over Maui from the west and southwest. Rainfall rates between one and two inches per hour will lead to ponding of water along roadways,” the NWS forecast stated.
