Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Company will announce plans this week related to renewable energy.  The plans involve investments at HC&S concerning Federal Energy Initiatives.  In attendance will be U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye, as well as officials from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the University of Hawaii, College of Tropical Agriculture.

Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan joins U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye in making the renewable energy announcement at HC&S.  She will also visit the USDA funded Lahaina Watershed Project to host a discussion with conservation partners and Lahaina, Maui community members.

Merrigan said the renewable energy announcement impacts both Hawaii as well as other parts of the country.  Earlier this year, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to support Obama Administration efforts to reduce energy consumption derived from fossil fuels and increase energy production from renewable energy sources. This energy initiative in Hawaii is a direct result of that MOU.
