Slack Key Masters, monthly at the MACC brings George Kahumoku Jr’s show to Central Maui
The successful seven-year Slack Key Show – Masters of Hawaiian Music in West Maui is coming to Maui Arts & Cultural Center in a monthly series, created to accommodate local residents as well as visitors staying in the South Maui area. Think of it as a laid-back, kanikapila style concert in the intimate setting of McCoy Studio Theater.
Slack Key Masters, monthly at the MACC, features George Kahumoku, Jr. as the host, who is a multiple Grammy Award winner and master slack key guitar player. George delights audiences with stories and anecdotes about his life and his music. He will open each show and will frequently feature a young rising star musician from Maui. The second half of the show will feature a special guest artist who is well known in the Hawaiian music scene. For the finale, all artists will come together on stage.
On Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 7:30 pm the new Slack Key Masters series will debut with Owana Salazar as the featured artist. Owana has made her name as the only female steel guitar player in Hawai‘i and one of the few wahine slack key players around. Owana’s musical talents allow her to flow between traditional and contemporary Hawaiian and jazz performance styles with ease. Her music reaches out to intimately embrace her audience. Kaulike Pescaia, winner of the 14th Annual Youth ‘Ukulele Contest, will open the show with George Kahumoku, Jr.
The Slack Key Masters series is presented by Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Tickets are available at the MACC Box Office for $25 standard and $45 VIP, which includes a sound-check at 6 pm and talk-story with artists (plus applicable fees).
