Proposed Wind Farm Site Added to Endangered Places List

Historic Hawai‘i Foundation (HHF) has announced five additions to the list of the Most Endangered Historic Places in Hawaii, including Ka’a Ahupua’a on Lanai, which is also the site of a planned wind farm.

The 20,000- acre Ka’a Ahupua’a site sits on the west side of Lanai where Castle & Cooke expects to build a 6,000 acre wind farm. The Environmental Impact Study is currently in process and is expected to take several more years to complete.

The annual list is compiled by HHF in cooperation with the State Historic Preservation Division and HONOLULU magazine. The 2011 additions are published in HONOLULU’s November issue. Reporter Victoria Wiseman writes, “The list is a call to action, but it’s also a way to appreciate the hidden treasures of our built environment.”

The 2011 Most Endangered Historic Places are:

• Manoa’s historic residences (Honolulu, Oahu)
• Kapahulu Art Moderne buildings (Honolulu, Oahu)
• Ka‘a Ahupua‘a (Lāna‘i)
• Queen Emma Building (Honolulu, Oahu)
• Kapaia Swinging Bridge (Lihue, Kauai)
