Hawaii DOE to Close Hawaiʻi Island Public Schools on Friday
By Maui Now Staff
The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education announced the closure of Hawaiʻi Island public schools on Friday due to the anticipation of severe weather associated with Tropical Storm Ana.
Students and staff of affected schools will be dismissed at the end of the school day tomorrow.
Additionally, all inter-scholastic athletic events and student activities at Hawaiʻi Island schools are cancelled beginning Thursday and through the weekend. Activities will resume when schools reopen.
Again, the closure at this time only affects public schools on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi on Friday, Oct. 17, 2014.
Any further adjustments will be determined by the state Department of Education.
The department notes that many schools serve as emergency shelters; however, County Civil Defense agencies have determined which schools are activated shelters.
Please note the following Hawaiʻi County designated shelters: Kaʻū High and Pāhala Elementary, Keaʻau High, Kohala High & Elementary, Kealakehe High, Konawaena High, Hilo High, Waiākea High, Pāhoa High & Intermediate, Honokaʻa High & Intermediate, and Waikoloa Elementary.
