A one-year-old boy died after being transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Thursday night for injuries sustained in a motor vehicle incident in Kīhei.  The incident was reported at 4:52 p.m. on Friday, July 17, 2015.

According to police reports, the boy was struck by a silver 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that was reversing within the VFW (Veteran of Foreign Wars) property on Uluniu Road.

Police say the pickup truck was reversing in the western direction, and struck the boy who was behind the vehicle.

The boy was initially transported to the hospital emergency room for treatment of critical life-threatening injuries, but later died, according to police reports.

The 30-year-old Pukalani man who was driving the pickup truck did not suffer any injuries.

According to a traffic synopsis filed by Maui Traffic Section Sergeant Gregg Rowe, the department continues to investigate the involvement of speed, alcohol and drugs.

The crash was the 12th fatality in Maui County, compared to 14 at the same time last year.
