Grass Fire Fanned by Kona Winds Burns Half Acre in Kula
A brush fire in Kula burned about a half-acre of grass on Sunday before it was brought under control.
Upcountry firefighters responded to the incident reported off of Koheo Road in Kula at 11:35 a.m. on Sunday Feb. 5, 2017.
Kula firefighters arrived at 11:51 a.m. to find a half-acre of grass on fire. Air 1 was called out to make water drops because of strong Kona winds fanning the fire.
Firefighters had the fire contained at 2:27 p.m. but did not call it extinguished on Sunday. Crews made periodic checks of the fire because of large trees in the burn area that may continue to smoke.
A shed was threatened during the incident, but there were no damages to property. The cause of the fire was undetermined.
A battalion chief and crews from Kula, Makawao, Wailea and Kahului, as well as the department’s Air 1 helicopter responded to the brush fire.
