History of Kamaʻole Ahupuaʻa Topic of Lecture, Feb. 25

The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary will host a lecture on the history of the Kamaʻole Ahupuaʻa in South Maui.

The talk is for the latest edition of the organization’s lecture series and includes a historical slide show and community discussion focusing on the history of the area and its role as a traditional settlement.

The place name Kamaʻole today describes a series of three South Maui beach parks that are frequented by residents and visitors alike.

According to sanctuary staff, the area once served as a fishing settlement, which surrounded the present day Kalama Beach Park, to the mauka Kamaʻole Ranch land that was sold to finance the Chinese revolution led by Dr. Sun Yat Sen.

The slide show will be facilitated by local historical researchers, Lucienne de Naie and Daniel Kanahele.

Kamaʻāina of the area are invited to share their family stories and remembrances of the region. The presentation was created with support from the Maui Tomorrow Foundation.

The lecture runs from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015 at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, Kīhei Conference Room, located at 726 South Kīhei Road.
