Maui Police Report 17th Motor Vehicle Fatality in 2018

On Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2018 a Motor Vehicle Collision occurred on South Papa Avenue south of Kaahumanu Avenue in Kahului.

Police say the collision occurred when a male pedestrian was walking across South Papa Avenue outside of a marked crosswalk when he was struck by a black 2018 Honda four-door sedan traveling southbound on South Papa Avenue.

The operator of the Honda, a 46-year-old female from Kahului, was utilizing her seatbelt and was not injured.

Police say the male pedestrian was transported to the hospital in stable condition.

On Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018, the male’s condition worsened and he died, according to police reports. The cause of death will be determined after an autopsy is performed. The male has not been identified.

The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol are unknown at this time as the investigation is ongoing.

This is Maui County’s 17th traffic fatality of 2018, compared to the same number this time last year.
