The Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety is seeking community input as a part of our Community Risk and Preparedness Initiative. This process helps create a data-driven foundation to help guide future planning, improve emergency response, and enhance community resilience across Maui.

Weems was reported missing by a concerned family member on the evening of Friday, May 8, 2026, after he failed to return from going snorkeling in the area of 100 Nohea Kai Drive in Kāʻanapali.  Weems had texted a family member at 1:30 p.m., indicating he was going snorkeling, and at approximately 3 p.m., a guest reported to hotel staff that they had observed what appeared to be a male in distress in the ocean. 

A structure fire reported at a second story condominium unit on Friday afternoon claimed the life of a Kapalua man. The occupant, who was pronounced dead at the scene, has since been identified as a 76-year-old man. The man’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation was joined by emergency responders and volunteers in a triennial emergency exercise at Kapalua Airport (JHM) in West Maui on Friday, April 17.

The Olowalu Fire Station, a privately funded project on donated land, would cover a growing residential community where fire is a risk and serve as a critical emergency hub between West and Central Maui.

These trucks join Maui’s fleet after the department lost four trucks in the Lahaina and Kula fires of August 2023.

The Maui Fire Department responded to 15 incidents directly related to the Kona Storm 2 that affected the state over the weekend.

These calls included 32 specifically flooding-related emergencies, five calls for sparking powerlines, five for vehicles stranded due to downed trees, six for boats that had parted their moorings due to the rough ocean conditions, and 10 swift water rescues in which 27 individuals were rescued.

One person was injured during a structure fire at a small restaurant building in Wailuku on Wednesday afternoon. Fire officials say the cause of the fire is under investigation, but preliminary indications are that it was accidental.

Firefighters and Ocean Safety personnel rescued two kayakers, a 37-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, from waters off of Pāpalaua Beach Park in West Maui, Saturday morning.

The Maui fire department responded to 22 fire-related calls over the New Year’s holiday, beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 31, 2025 to 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2026.

There will be two public aerial fireworks displays in Maui County this year — one from the Grand Wailea Resort in South Maui, and the other from the Four Seasons Resort Lānaʻi at Mānele Bay. Both shows begin at approximately 11:59 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, 2025.

Seven people were displaced following a home fire in the Piʻihana area of Wailuku on Sunday night. Department officials say there are preliminary indications that the fire may have been intentionally set.

The County of Maui’s, Department of Fire and Public Safety announces the sale of New Year’s Eve fireworks starting on Friday, Dec. 26, 2025, and ending on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2026, at 12:01 a.m.

Maui firefighters responded to a rubbish fire off the Kūihelani Highway in Central Maui on Sunday. The incident was reported at 8:28 a.m. on Nov. 23.

Firefighters responded to two structures fires Wednesday afternoon on Molokaʻi—one in Hoʻolehua and the other on Kalua Koi Road. The cause of both fires is under investigation.
