Maui’s 4th Annual ‘Ukulele Festival: Free Event, Chance to Win One of Several ‘Ukuleles
The Maui Arts & Cultural Center celebrates the 4th Annual Maui ‘Ukulele Festival this weekend.

The event begins with a free ukulele workshop at the McCoy Studio Theater this Saturday, October 17, 2009 beginning at 10 a.m. The workshop is conducted by master instructor Roy Sakuma, for students of all ages. Lessons are designed for beginning and intermediate players. The only requirements are that a student can hold C, F and G7 chords. Students should bring their own ‘ukulele, notepaper and a pencil. Register by calling 808-243-4221. All participants will be entered in a drawing to win a hand-crafted ‘ukulele.
Then on Sunday, October 18, 2009, the festival features five hours of island music by artists including Herb Ohta-san with Nando Suan; Uncle Richard Ho’opi’i; Joy featuring Nelly Toyama, Candyce Narimatsu and Daniel Baduria; Hulu Lindsey with Halau Na Lei Kaumaka O Uka; the Hula Honeys; Kamakakehau Fernandez; Na Palapalai; Kanekoa, featuring Vince Esquire; the Kalama Intermediate Band; Kamehameha Schools ‘Ukulele Ensemble; and the Kupuna group-Pennies from Heaven. Admission is free—this Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Events Lawn of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Gates open at 12:30 p.m. Blankets and low-back chairs are encouraged.
