Maui prison escapee Kahaleauki captured

Maui Community Correctional Center Escapee Harry Kahaleauki was apprehended today (Wednesday, May 12, 2010) at approximately 3:05 p.m. in the Kihei area.

Authorities say Maui police tailed the vehicle Kahaleauki was in for a few minutes before making a traffic stop at the intersection of North Kihei Road and Piilani Highway.

Kahaleauki, who was a passenger in the vehicle was arrested along with two other adult males who were in his company.

Kahaleauki has been at large since Saturday when he escaped from the custody of Adult Correction Officers while attending his brother’s funeral at Ballard’s Mortuary in Kahului.

The 38 year old inmate has multiple prior convictions and was awaiting trial for burglary.  Further details are pending release.
