Lokelani Math Students Open “Maui Made Market”
By Sonia Isotov
More than 80 students from the Niu Team at Lokelani Intermediate School in Kihei are taking 7th grade math to a new level by running their own company.
Starting on Sunday, October 16 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., students will hold their first “Maui Made Market.” The market will feature local vendors who sell products that are only made in Hawaii. Currently, the students are inviting food vendors, produce vendors and product vendors to participate.
Behind the scenes, the students are doing all the work. Students will handle the advertising, accounting, preparing the market area measurements, and getting up very early to do the set-up.
“This is the student’s first market. During the week, they will finish their final preparations for the event. They have advertised, delivered flyers and now we can just wait and see how things will unfold. They will be graded on all prior work and how well they run the event on Sunday. Then next Monday, the students will graph and analyze how they did so that next month will be even better,” said Peggy Temple, seventh grade math teacher at Lokelani Intermediate School who is leading the project.
“We are hoping for a huge success for all of the businesses as it is the student’s plans to hold a market once a month,” continued Temple. The students plan to hold the market once a month, usually the second Sunday of the month, in and around the cafeteria at Lokelani Intermediate School.
Besides wanting to bring a market to Kihei, the students are using the market as a fundraiser for an end of the year trip to the island of Hawaii. The students are looking forward to experience Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii Island. The students are studying Hawaiian history this year and will visit Volcano National Park and make a comparison study between Maui’s Haleakala and the Hawaii Island volcanoes.
Vendor booths in the cafeteria are $50 and on the outside of the cafeteria, $40. Application can be picked up at the school where vendors can also pick out their booth space or contact Peggy Temple at 205-4712 or email ptemplejfk@aol.com. Applications can also be emailed to you when you call. Lokelani Intermediate School is located at 1401 Liloa Street in Kihei, next to Kihei Elementary School.
