VIDEO: New Year’s Eve Fire Destroys Kahului Home

A 600 square foot cottage was destroyed by fire in Kahului on New Years Eve.
The Maui Fire Department’s Engine-10, Hazmat-10, and Rescue-10 were dispatched to 51 Kono Place in Kahului at 9:34 p.m. on December 31, 2012.
Engine-10, which was first on scene, found the cottage fully engulfed with flames.
Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said an adjacent structure was also found with flames and smoke coming off its roof top.
The cottage and its contents were completely destroyed with damages estimated at $152,000. The damage to the adjacent structure, Mainaga said, was contained to one section of the home, with damages estimated at $25,000.
Authorities said residents of the cottage were displaced and left the scene. Their status was unknown at last report.
The adjacent structure was under construction and was not occupied.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A Kahului home was destroyed by fire during the New Year’s Eve celebration in Central Maui.
The fire was reported at around 9:45 p.m. on Kono Place in Kahului.
Fire crews remained on scene at around 10 p.m.
