Excessive High Winds Force Maui Landfill Closure
By Maui Now Staff
County officials say “excessive high winds” forced the early closure today of the Central Maui landfill.
The closure went into effect at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25. County officials say the landfill will close early again on Wednesday, June 26, to allow staff to collect windblown debris.
The landfill is required by law to comply with strict litter control requirements, according to a county announcement advising of the closure.
The early closures are necessary to implement control measures to avoid potential citations and fines from the Hawaii Department of Health, environmental management officials said in a county press release.
Conditions will be reassessed on Thursday, July 27.
There were no warnings, watches or advisories issued today by the National Weather Service regarding wind conditions on Maui.
