A brush fire near Kmart in Kahului jumped across the Hāna Highway before being brought under control on Saturday afternoon, fire officials said.
The incident was reported just after 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, about 150 yards east of Kmart, said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
Responding firefighters arrived to find a 10,000-square-foot area of brush involved, officials said.
While fighting the fire, officials say the flames jumped across the highway and began burning a 1,300-square-foot area next to Ballards Mortuary.
Additional fire crews were called in, and both fires were brought under control and extinguished by 3:18 p.m.
The cause of the fire was undetermined, and there were no monetary damages or injuries reported.
