Updated Election Results: Puna Polls & 800 Uncounted
By Wendy Osher
Key races remained unchanged after Friday night’s make-up election for two precincts on Hawaiʻi Island that were impacted by Tropical Cyclone Iselle, and the addition of 800 absentee ballots on Maui that were unaccounted for in Saturday’s Primary.
The margin of victory widened for Senator Brian Schatz who held onto the democratic party nomination, with 1,769 votes more than Representative Colleen Hanabusa.
That’s up from the 1,635 vote lead Shatz had after the initial count on Saturday.
The outcome also remained unchanged for democratic primaries in Maui County that were close enough to potentially be effected by the added absentee votes discovered by elections officials.
In the District 6 Senate race, Roz Baker gained additional votes to maintain her win over democratic challenger Terez Amato; and in the District 9 House race, Justin Woodson holds onto his seat after maintaining a lead over democratic challenger James “Kimo” Apana.
The additional ballots on Maui also boosted voter turnout to 33.1% with 28,337 of the 85,581 registered voters casting ballots. That’s up from Saturday’s initial count in which voter turnout was estimated at 32.2%.
Despite the revised figure, Maui County continues to have the lowest voter turnout in the state, below the 41.14% statewide turnout; the 47% turnout on Kauaʻi; the 43.3% turnout in Honolulu, and the 37.5% turnout in Hawaiʻi County.
2014 Primary Election – FINAL “Revised” Printout 8:22 p.m. 8/15/2014:
***Including precincts at Hawaiian Paradise Community Center and Keoneopoko Elementary School on Hawaiʻi Island; and 800 additional absentee votes in Maui County
