Maui Police Department Receives National Recognition

The National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) recently announced that the Maui Police Department School Resource Officer (SRO) unit is the recipient of the 2018 NASRO Model Agency Award. This award will be presented during the closing ceremonies at the 28th Annual NASRO National School Safety Conference in Reno, Nevada which runs from June 24 to 29, 2018.

A multitude of accomplishments by the SRO unit during the past year were cited, which included numerous projects and special operations, departmental trainings conducted, school presentations and youth diversion programs.

In addition, King Kekaulike School Resource Officer Marvin Tevaga received the 2018 Floyd Ledbetter National School Resource Officer of the Year Award. This award will be presented at the opening ceremonies of the annual NASRO conference on June 25, 2018.

Officer Tevaga’s accomplishments included organizing a shoe drive campaign for children overseas in India, serving as a volunteer youth flag football referee with the Maui Police Athletic League, organizing School Traffic Safety Awareness campaigns as well as conducting criminal investigations affecting minors. Officer Tevaga also plays the ukulele while singing for his students during their lunch hour as well as organizing and performing in school sponsored concerts.
