Hikianalia Departure Delayed Another Day
The launch of the Polynesian Voyaging canoe Hikianalia on a 30-day voyage to California has been pushed back until Thursday at the earliest, due to weather. Windy conditions earlier this week, and a small craft advisory today resulted in the delay.
The Alahula Kai o Maleka voyage will carry forward the Mālama Honua message of caring for the Earth from the recent worldwide voyage.
The planned arrival in San Francisco in September coincides with the Global Climate Action Summit. Thousands are expected to greet Hikianalia and her crew as she sails under the Golden Gate Bridge and arrives at Aquatic Park in San Francisco for a welcome ceremony and celebration on Sept. 8, 2018.
Hikianalia will then sail down the coast of California to San Diego and engage with communities along the way.
The canoe is expected to return to Hawaii in December 2018.
